This class is an introduction to the groundbreaking (and rule breaking!) world of avant-garde film and video. Through screenings, discussions, and hands-on production, we will explore the intersection of contemporary art and cinema starting with legendary experimental filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, Derek Jarman, and Jan Švankmajer all of the way to their modern counterparts like Miranda July, David Lynch and Sharon Lockhart.

Students will have the opportunity to submit their finished videos for possible inclusion in the 2016 Virginia Film Festival’s Digital Media Gallery, a collaborative exhibition with the University of Virginia Cinematography program that will run for the entire month of November at Second Street Gallery. The gallery space will be curated by Tosha Grantham.
