support us

Your contributions are important to our growth and success. 2012 was a great year for Light House.  We:
  • Offered 50 workshops and served 12% more students than in 2011;
  • Collaborated with 33 different nonprofit organizations and schools, an 83% increase since last year, including new partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters and Shenandoah National Park Trust;
  • Expanded workshop offerings to include editing, music composition and experimental film in addition to our core Light House programs in animation, documentary and narrative film;
  • Partnered with Lana Young to teach Television Production to students and to create a TV show that spreads the word about good work being done in the Charlottesville community. (Organizations featured included the Charlottesville Free Clinic, Fralin Museum of Art and Silver Lining Blood Drive/Virginia Blood Services.)
  • Celebrated when our students’ films were accepted into national festivals including the Los Angeles Filmmakers Showcase, Lowcountry Indie Festival and Chicago’s CineYouth Festival;
  • Congratulated graduating seniors who are now attending universities (some with film-related scholarships) including University of Chicago, Bryn Mawr College and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Virginia Commission of the Arts stated in a recent letter to us:

“Light House has grown in a meaningful way…. A point of pride in the community…. Successfully addressing issues regarding youth from all backgrounds…. Creating outstanding filmmakers…. The budget reflects meaningful growth…. Focuses on a part of art that we do not see anywhere else.”

In 2013, we will continue this work—offering outstanding programming that builds students’ skills, enhances creative thought, and strengthens our community.  Our young filmmakers are becoming thoughtful leaders who collaborate with others and produce powerful media.  Your gift to Light House makes all this possible.  As the only filmmaking school of our kind in Virginia, Light House needs your support.  We invite you to start a tradition of giving to support our efforts.
