Topic:
Where I Live: Defining Home

Teams of up to 4 filmmakers in 9th-12th grades are invited to enter Light House Studio’s Play/Pause/Rewind Film Competition. Create a 4 minute movie about the topic: “Where I Live: Defining Home.” The deadline for submissions is May 1st.

Selected films will be screened on May 20th at Vinegar Hill Theatre. A panel of judges will select and award prizes to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place films. Filmmakers will have the opportunity to schedule individual feedback sessions with judges prior to the screening.




Rules

  • Film can be in any medium of your choice (narrative, animation, documentary)
  • Film can be any genre of your choice (thriller, sci-fi, comedy, drama, etc)
  • Film cannot be longer than 4 minutes, including credits
  • Each team can have up to 4 filmmakers between 9th-12th grade (at least one team member must be a VA resident)
  • Must be made entirely by high school students.
  • No limit on number of actors or locations (must get release forms)
  • Must incorporate 2017 Light House Studio Play/Pause/Rewind Film Competition in credits
  • No cursing, inappropriate behavior, or graphic violence will be screened
  • By entering your work to the Light House Studio Play/Pause/Rewind Film Competition, you attest that you give permission for it to screen and be used by Light House Studio in promotional/programming materials.
  • All music and other copyrighted material used must be properly licensed and credited. All royalty free content must also be properly credited in the end credits.
  • The final deadline for submission is 5:00pm ET, May 1st, 2017. Submissions may be made online or by mail (entry form will be available in February).
  • Students may submit more than one film
  • Prizes will be awarded at the screening on May 20th. If at least one filmmaker of a winning team is not present at the screening, the team must schedule a time to pick up their prize from Vinegar Hill Theatre by June 26th.

Screening
Selected films will screen at Vinegar Hill Theatre on May 20th at 4pm, 2017. Films are not guaranteed to be screened if the filmmakers do not follow all rules.

 
Judging Criteria
Films will be judged based on their unique and thoughtful approach to the topic, technical excellence, overall quality and originality.

 
Awards & Prizes
Light House Studio will award prizes to three films. Prizes will be split among filmmakers. Scholarship money awarded will be written in check to the filmmakers (up to four) listed on the submission form.
Films will be selected by a panel of judges and awarded as such:

1st Prize
  • $1,000 Scholarship Money (split amongst filmmakers)
  • 1 Special Skills Light House Studio Workshop* for each filmmaker – 1-2 day workshop
  • Automatic acceptance of film to the 2017 Youth Film Festival
  • Light House Studio T-Shirts (1 per filmmaker)
2nd Prize
  • $500 Scholarship Money (split amongst filmmakers)
  • 1 Special Skills Light House Studio Workshop* for each filmmaker – 1-2 day workshop
  • Light House Studio T-Shirt (1 per filmmaker)
3rd Prize
  • 1 Special Skills Light House Studio Workshop* for each filmmaker – 1-2 day workshop
  • Light House Studio T-Shirt (1 per filmmaker)

*Special Skills Workshop must be used within one year of the award date!
